Like every 14 year old girl, Hollie was eager for more independence and privacy. But unlike every 14 year old girl, Hollie was disabled, in a wheelchair and living in a home that made it difficult for her to do things on her own. So her mum asked KMS Care to help adapt their home. In her own words, this is Hollie’s story of how our adaptations work completely transformed her life...

When I was 14, everywhere I went I always seemed to be in somebody’s way (which wasn’t fun). But now I think back, I guess being a permanent wheelchair user, with full length leg extensions on, I would take up a lot of room! Since we had an extension built I am no longer in people’s way and my life is better now without a doubt.

In the kitchen I have my very own sink and for the first time ever I can make my own drinks. I can also help with cooking tea – how did my mum ever cope without me? I’m in my new bedroom all the time listening to music and talking online, it’s so much better as I’m finally able to turn around in it. My new bathroom is attached to my bedroom and it’s lovely; it’s bright and it’s pink. The best thing about it is my funky new sink and taps that I can reach on my own. Not everything went to plan, but KMS came up with practical solutions and were happy to change anything to make my life easier. They thought of everything from a window I could reach to the angles of taps. Thank you over and over again, especially for keeping my poor mum sane!
